Tips from Thompson’s on Caring for and Maintaining your Jewellery!
Care/Cleaning
One of the most important aspects of maintaining the beauty of a piece of jewellery over its lifetime is the amount of care put into its preservation. Depending on the material used to craft your jewellery, it is a good idea to not wear it while performing any strenuous work – including exercising, working on your home or any other heavy labour; blows to the ring may bend its prongs, the ring itself and could even chip your diamond.
Although diamond is known as the hardest material on earth, it still runs the risk of being chipped: a hard blow to the girdle (it’s middle) or culet (the pointy bottom) may damage it. Aside from this, however, diamond is essentially indestructible.
To ensure the longevity of your jewels, it’s best to store it in a jewellery box (Wolf jewellery boxes) as this could scratch your item or wear down the metal and its prongs. For even more protection, use the ultrasonic machine available to purchase at Thompson’s jewellers to keep your jewellery looking its best.
USE ULTRASONIC CLEANERS WITH CAUTION
While you can purchase a professional ultrasonic you should be aware that not all gems and jewelry can be safely cleaned in it.
Ultrasonic cleaners should not be used to clean:
Gemstones with surface-reaching breaks that have been filled with a substance such as oil, resin or a glass-like material
Organic gem materials such as pearls, coral, ivory, or amber
Gems that have been coated with a non-permanent substance like plastic or wax
Some heat-treated gemstones like emeralds and tanzanite.
Gems that are susceptible to heat and temperature changes whether they are treated or not. Some of these gems include tanzanite, feldspar (sunstone and moonstone), fluorite, iolite, kunzite, lapis lazuli, malachite, opal, topaz, turquoise, zircon and others.

CARE & MAINTENANCE FOR SWAROVSKI
Swarovski crystal is a delicate material that must be handled with special care. To ensure that your Swarovski product remains in the best possible condition over an extended period of time, please observe the advice below to avoid damage:
Jewellery & Watches:
Store your Jewellery in the original packaging or a soft pouch to avoid scratches.
Avoid contact with water.
Remove Jewellery before washing hands, swimming, and/or applying products (e.g. perfume, hairspray, soap, or lotion), as this could harm the metal and reduce the life of the plating, as well as cause discoloration and loss of crystal brilliance.
Avoid hard contact (i.e. knocking against objects) that can scratch or chip the crystal.
Figurines & Decorative Objects:
Polish your product carefully with a soft, lint-free cloth or clean it by hand with lukewarm water.
Do not soak your crystal products in water.
Dry with a soft, lint free cloth to maximize brilliance.
Avoid contact with harsh, abrasive materials and glass/window cleaners.
When handling your crystal, it is advisable to wear cotton gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints.
